STOP-BANG Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Screening

Screens for moderate-severe obstructive sleep apnoea using 8 clinical variables. Score ≥3 warrants further evaluation; ≥5 has high sensitivity for severe OSA.

S — Do you Snore loudly (louder than talking or loud enough to be heard through closed doors)?
T — Do you often feel Tired, fatigued, or sleepy during the daytime (e.g. fall asleep while driving)?
O — Has anyone Observed you stop breathing or choking/gasping during your sleep?
P — Do you have or are you being treated for high blood Pressure?
B — BMI > 35 kg/m²?
A — Age > 50 years?
N — Neck circumference > 40 cm (measured at thyroid cartilage)?
G — Gender = Male?

Low risk for moderate-severe OSA
Estimated OSA risk: ~3–7%. Routine clinical follow-up is appropriate. No specific anaesthetic precautions mandated, but screen again if symptoms change. Polysomnography (PSG) referral is not routinely required at this risk level.
